Blanche has a difficult time transitioning to her role as a mother because of the expectation that mothers must sacrifice their individuals wants, needs, and desires for the sake of their children. Blanche provides love, comfort, and care to the men in her life, but as long as she is defined by her role as a mother, these relationships hold little weight in establishing Blanche as a caregiver. Yet the balance of power does not fall in her favor as she is often subordinate to their wants and desires, always shaping and molding her physical appearance, demeanor, and attitude to what is likely to please her partners. For Blanche, deviant sexual behavior and her willingness to subvert the rules are limited to what is acceptable behavior within monogamous relationships. While she revels in being called a slut and being known for her sexual prowess, she does not readily accept her daughter’s desire to become a single mother or her brother’s homosexuality. Labeling Blanche as a slut for her promiscuity and openness about her sexual desire does not mean that she acts without judgment. However, the dichotomous relationship between the slut and the good girl suggest that women must be one or the other. Blanche represents the complexity of women’s shifting identities, desires, and priorities. Her “becoming” resists a linear start and finish, and the comedy of her character comes from subverting cultural expectations and clinging to them in equal measure. Perhaps it is more accurate to say that Blanche is best defined not as a slut but as an “unruly woman” who typifies the disruptive identities available to women in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries (Rowe 2011). This disruption allows women to navigate shifts in power and support, disrupting the reliance on the institutions that promise to reward conformity and sacrifices that often fail women like Rose who play by the rules.
